Nats agree to terms with 18 players including Skole

The Nationals have agreed to terms with 18 players selected in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, including fifth-round pick third baseman Matt Skole.

Skole, who played for Georgia Tech, hit .348 with 10 home runs, 58 RBIs and 44 walks in 61 games last season.

Skole, 21, posted a .445 on-base and .545 slugging percentages en route to Second-Team All-ACC honors. During his three-seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Skole hit .329 with 47 home runs and 179 RBI.

Nationals sign two more draft picks

The Nationals agreed to terms with pitchers A.J. Morris (fourth round, Kansas State University) and Paul Applebee (10th round, University of California-Riverside). 

Morris went 14-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 16 starts for Kansas State as a junior to earn the Golden Spikes nomination. A first-team All-American, Morris set single-season school records in wins, strikeouts (100), innings (116.1) and starts as a junior. He won 12 conference games en route to earning Big XII Pitcher of the Year honors in 2009.

With Friday’s signings, the Nationals have now agreed to terms with 25 players from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, including nine of their top 12 picks.

The Nationals agreed to terms with 16 of their 61 draft picks including right-hander Trevor Holder (third round, University of Georgia), shortstop Michael Taylor (sixth round, Westminster [FL] Academy), right-handed pitcher Taylor Jordan (ninth round, Brevard [FL] Community College), outfielder Justin Bloxom (11tho round, Kansas State University), right-handed pitcher Patrick Lehman (13th round, George Washington University), outfielder Naoya Washiya (14th round, College [CA] of the Desert), shortstop Sean Nicol (16th round, University of San Diego), right-handed pitcher Frank Corolla (19th round, University of Houston), third baseman Jack Walker (20th round, Concordia [IL] University), left-handed pitcher Mitchell Clegg (21st round, University of Massachusetts), right-handed pitcher Dustin Crane (24th round, Snead [AL] State Community College), catcher Dianison Boekhoudt (Mary Carroll [TX] High), left-handed pitcher Evan Bronson (29th round, Trinity [TX] College), Rob Wort (30th round, Jefferson [Mo] College), outfielder Jay Sferra (31st round, UNLV) and right-handed pitcher Kyle Morrison (32nd round, Wagner [NY] College). 

Including Wednesday’s signing of right-handed reliever Drew Storen (10th overall selection, Stanford University), the Nationals have now agreed to terms with 17 players from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.
