Plans for the Nationals' rotation in September
Once they make their call ups in September, the Nationals are expected to juggle at least two spots in the rotation.
The Nationals are planning to monitor the innings of right-handers Craig Stammen and J.D. Martin. Once they reach a certain amount of innings, Stammen and Martin most likely will be shut down for the season
General manager Mike Rizzo did not say which pitchers would be called up, but it's assumed that right-hander Collin Balester and left-hander Ross Detwiler will be promoted to the big club and receive a few starts.
"I have a number in my mind of all of our starting pitchers. I'm taking into account number of innings, stressful innings and the number of innings in Triple-A or in the big leagues. We have a strict plan for each and every one of our pitchers. Once they reach their number, they will stop pitching."
Shutting down young pitchers is nothing new in the Nationals organization. In 2007, the Nationals shut down left-hander John Lannan after he pitched a combined 158 innings in the Minors and big leagues.
How about Sharon Martis? He's not in the Nat's plans anymore?
I haven't heard about since he's been demoted!

I thought Shairon Martis had the best stuff of ANY of our starters when he was on. What irks me is Craig Stammen and JD Martin can be mediocre for months and not get demoted, when Martis shows flashes of stardom on some nights, and others looks awful, yet he still gets demoted even though the ceiling is so much higher.
Martin Blows, I'm amazed he has an ERA anywhere near 4. Theres a reason he was in the minors for 9 years, he sucks, we're the only team to stupid to realize that. Stammen looks like a future 5th starter, but my thing is, the innings hes getting to me could go a lot further if someone like Martis was given them in terms of which pitcher has a higher peak.

Martis has 140 innings pitched on the year already, and has far from dominated in AAA since being demoted. He's a big part of the future plans, so I wouldn't be surprised if they shut him down soon.
Marco Estrada has been effective the last month, so he has to be a leading candidate for one last look. Atilano was an up and comer, but has had crap year. He has a few innings left in the tank, so might get a call. Then besides Ballester, don't see many other options. Chico isn't very effective in rehab at Harrisburg.
