Rangers have inquired about Nats’ Coffey

The Rangers have inquired about Nationals right-hander Todd Coffey, according to a baseball source.

Texas is looking for a setup man, but the two clubs are not in serious talks at the moment.

It’s not known whether the Nationals would trade Coffey. A text to general manager Mike Rizzo was not returned. The Nationals are need of offense, which is one of the worst in the National League. They have a .229 batting average.

Coffey, 30, is part of an excellent bullpen, which features Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard. Coffey is having one of his best season of his career. Entering Friday’s action against Padres, Coffey has allowed four earned runs in 19 innings.

I hope the Nats keep Coffey, he does a good job…

Any smart GM would unload him now. Classic sell-high scenario, it’s not like we’re going to contend this year so why keep an overloaded bullpen? If Rizzo can get a solid offensive prospect in return, I say go for it.

Agree of good move to trade Coffey now in his best year…if we cn obtain a good offensive player and or with very good potential…Don’t trade him cheap…un an advantageous position now,

If you’re looking at Coffey as trade bait, look at the other gems in basket. We’ve waited since Z’s 8th game with out his big ‘O’. Morse is a stud and Bernadina looks more than solid. We can trade away for gold, come the deadline……Didn’t even bring up Pudge.
