Olsen getting better; Flores going to Harrisburg

Nationals left-hander Scott Olsen, on the disabled list because of shoulder tendinitis, played catch recently and is expected to go to the team’s complex in Viera, Fla., to rehab the shoulder.

Manager Manny Acta didn’t give a timetable as to when Olsen would return to action.

Meanwhile, catcher Jesus Flores is going on a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg. Acta hopes to have Flores back with the Nationals by the weekend series against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

With Flores coming back, the Nationals have to make a decision on either Josh Bard or Wil Nieves. Bard has made dramatic improvements on defense and is largely credited for helping the young pitchers such as Craig Stammen and Ross Detwiler.

Nieves is out of options and appears the least likely to go. He has done the job on offense and defense. Entering Sunday’s action, Nieves is hitting .265 with four RBIs.

No offense to Josh Bard, however, Nieves needs to be the one that stays. Wil has been hitting very well and proved that he is a good defensive catcher. Not many catchers could block all of the sliders in the dirt and stop all of the Daniel Cabrera pitches!

And in Sunday’s game against the Orioles he went 2-4 with an RBI and run and no strike outs. The throw he made to second was ruled safe, however, Adam Jones was clearly out when you watch the replay so he can throw too.

He also has the best attitude on the team. He has been catching for Martis who has most wins so that should say something too. Just because Bard got to catch for Detwiler the first night, doesn’t mean Nieves wouldn’t be okay with Detwiler.

KEEP WIL NIEVES!!!!!
