Dukes getting better; Hernandez can't grip bat

Manager Manny Acta said that outfielder Elijah Dukes’ left hamstring is getting better. Dukes was able to do his running drills without any problems on Saturday afternoon. Dukes is expected to run the bases on Sunday and then go to the team’s complex in Viera, Fla. to work out.

“He looks very good. He changed directions in every type of drill that we put him through. He felt really good. The hamstring didn’t tighten up or anything, so he is pretty much ready,” Acta said.

Second baseman Anderson Hernandez was not in the lineup for the second straight day because of a sore right pinky. Manager Manny Acta said Hernandez couldn’t grip a bat. There isn’t any talk of putting Hernandez on the disabled list.

Catcher Jesus Flores, on the disabled list because of a right shoulder contusion, is expected to begin his rehab assignment at Double-A Harrisburg.

Consideration should be made to put him in DL and meanwhile call up an extra infielder like Gonzalez we’ll need for depth and flexibility.

We need more punch in offense as our last two games have shown as our starting rotation is starting to show strength; and the bat of Dukes and Flores will surely help return our offense to what it was earlier….and yes replace Hernandez(place on DL)w/the fully-healthy Gonzalez.

Thanks for the inside info, Bill. It’s tough to see those Nationals continue to struggle out there in Washington, their pitching is just not getting it done and it’s almost depressing. The Nats constantly appear to scuffle year after year. Detwiler pitched a beauty today for Washington though, he’s going to be an important part of that future in the Nationals organization. Also, sweet catch by Maxwell.
