Nats must make decision on backup catcher

Before Monday’s game, the Nationals are expected to call up right-hander Jordan Zimmermann from Triple-A Syracuse and take one of their backup catchers — Josh Bard and Wil Nieves — off the 25-man roster.

Bard is known for his bat, while Nieves has a reputation of being great behind the plate. Manager Manny Acta said in the right situation, a team would be looking for a person with defensive skills.

“He is only going to play once a week to rest the [the starting catcher],” Acta said. “That being said, we are going to keep whoever we think is the best fit for us. We are also going to try to make the right decision, so we can keep both guys somehow, someway. A lot of things play into that decision.”

It better be Nieves. Bard has let an awful lot of pitches get past him and his arm is extremely weak.

I shall try to leave this comment only once. I agree about Nieves being our choice. Indeed, I fail to see why Josh Bard is on our roster at all.

The worst trade we ever made was to give up Brian Schneider and Ryan Church for Milledge. I’m not as down on Milledge as a lot of folks are — I think he’s a fine ballplayer and I think his demotion was a bit hasty, but we lost a lot more in Schneider than Milledge could ever provide even if he fully lives up to his potential. Schneider is a clutch hitter with a great arm who calls the right pitches at the right time, a talent Flores seems to lack. Indeed, Nieves seems to be better at that aspect of catching than Flores, who seems to think you can fool good hitters by surprising them with the pitch they’re hoping to get.

All that said, I am becoming rather concerned that maybe Manny Acta will never be a winner. His constant and steadfast “accentuate-the-positive” attitude, when maybe a little more realism might be a more effective stance, is getting on my nerves. At 1-9 the glass is NOT half-full. I KNOW we are a LOT more talented than that, so we might have to look upward from the player level for the cause of our woes.

Havent seen that bat hes known for…but perhaps he needs a few more AB’s to determine. But the word is out about his arm and you run on Bard. We all love Nieves and want him to stay. Find another lefty to bat and keep Will
