Tidbits about Nats
* I went to Space Coast Stadium this morning looking for newcomer Joe Beimel, but I never saw him. It turns out that he was taking his physical. I will most likely see him on Saturday.
I can’t tell you how happy Manny Acta is about the Beimel signing. He really thinks he has a solid bullpen now. I never believed Jesus Colome, who is having a good spring, was the leading candidate for the eight-inning job. Colome has been too inconsistent during the Acta era.
* First base coach Marquis Grissom will not be with the Nationals for the next two games because of a death in the family. Cesar Cedeno was coaching first base on Friday against the Tigers.
* I spoke to an opposing scout on Wednesday and he told me the Nationals are trying to trade first baseman Nick Johnson and outfielder Austin Kearns, but doubts they will be dealt. The scout doesn’t see a team willing to take on Kearns’ $8 million salary or take a chance on Johnson, who is known for missing a lot of games because of injuries.
* There was a report that came out last night that said the Nationals have interest in reliever Will Ohman. That’s no longer the case now that they have signed Beimel. The Nationals are now going in-house to staff the rest of their bullpen.
