Nationals make first round of cuts

The Nationals made their first round of cuts on Tuesday morning. They re-assigned pitchers Bobby Brownlie, Justin Jones, Preston Larrison and J.D. Martin, catcher Javier Herrera, infielders Chris Marrero and Matt Whitney and outfielder Destin Hood to Minor League camp.

The Nationals also optioned left-hander Mike O’Connor to Triple A Syracuse and left-hander pitcher Ross Detwiler to Double-A Harrisburg.

With the cuts, the Nationals’ Spring Training roster now stands at 58.

Some questions I have, Bill:
1) On the Javier Valentin deal: HE’s saying he’ll make the Opening Day roster, but I’m of the opinion we can’t carry 3 catchers. Since we know Jesus Flores is our #1, and Wil Nieves backs him up (perhaps), I’m seeing Luke Montz either @ Harrisburg or Syracuse to start the year. So where does that leave Valentin??
2) Since we’re waiting on Dmitri to get better healthwise (and being @ Syracuse), and it’s apparent Adam Dunn is our 1B for the moment, does this mean Nick gets traded any time soon?? Or are we waiting on Chris Marrero to show us something in spring training??
3) Outfieldwise, who’s the odd man out?? Meaning who gets sent to the minors among Bernadina, Justin Maxwell, and anybody else you want to name?? (Personally, I’D like those 2 to make it. Saw both of them @ Harrisburg last year, as well as Ian Desmond. HE needs to make it, too.)
Love reading you (on my cell phone…lol) and your column. Wish everyone could follow MY MLBlog just as much…lol
