Kasten has pep talk with baseball operations staff

A day after Jim Bowden resigned as general manager of the Nationals, team president Stan Kasten held a meeting with his baseball operations staff early Monday morning, informing them that good times are ahead for the franchise and that they have the opportunity to advance up the organizational ladder.

Kasten even told the staff how he took advantage of his opportunities when he joined Ted Turner’s corporation in the 1970s.

There were at least 18 people at the meeting and Kasten did not say when he will name a GM to replace Bowden. According to two sources, Kasten was a calming influence at the meeting.

“He put everybody at ease,” said one baseball source. “He spelled out there are a lot of opportunities for people in the organization. He explained this is a perfect time for some people to step up, have some ingenuity to come up with new ideas and take ownership of it. Stan implored us to take that challenge. I think everybody walked out of there and said, “This can work.”
